Out-of-Bounds Read in Apple macOS ImageIO (CVE‑2026‑20634) Enables Information Disclosure

Apple’s ImageIO framework contains an out‑of‑bounds read bug (CVE‑2026‑20634) that can disclose memory contents when processing crafted SGI images. The flaw is low‑severity but may be leveraged with other vulnerabilities for full compromise, posing a supply‑chain risk for organizations that deploy macOS devices.

Out-of-Bounds Read in Apple macOS ImageIO (CVE‑2026‑20634) Enables Information Disclosure

What It Is – A low‑severity (CVSS 3.3) out‑of‑bounds read bug in the ImageIO framework’s SGI image parser allows an attacker to read memory beyond a buffer’s bounds, potentially leaking sensitive data. The flaw can be chained with other vulnerabilities for code execution.

Exploitability – No public exploit code is known; the vulnerability requires a crafted SGI image to be processed by a vulnerable macOS system. The attack vector is local to the process but can be triggered remotely if an attacker can induce the victim to open a malicious image (e.g., via email or web download).

Affected Products – Apple macOS (all versions prior to the March 2026 security update).

TPRM Impact – Organizations that rely on macOS‑based workstations, development environments, or third‑party services running on macOS face a supply‑chain data‑leak risk. Even a low‑severity disclosure can aid more serious exploits against critical assets.

Recommended Actions –

  1. Deploy Apple’s March 2026 security update (KB 126347) to all macOS endpoints immediately.
  2. Inventory all macOS devices in your vendor ecosystem and verify patch status.
  3. Block or sandbox SGI image handling in email gateways and web proxies until patches are applied.
  4. Monitor system logs for unexpected ImageIO activity or crashes.
  5. Incorporate this CVE into your vulnerability‑management scoring model for third‑party risk assessments.
