Heap-Based Buffer Overflow in GStreamer JPEG Parser (CVE‑2026‑3082) Enables Remote Code Execution

A critical heap‑based buffer overflow in GStreamer’s JPEG parser (CVE‑2026‑3082) allows unauthenticated remote code execution. The flaw impacts any product that embeds the GStreamer framework, posing a supply‑chain risk for downstream vendors and customers.

Heap-Based Buffer Overflow in GStreamer JPEG Parser (CVE‑2026‑3082) Enables Remote Code Execution

What It Is – A heap‑based buffer overflow resides in GStreamer’s JPEG parser when handling malformed Huffman tables. The flaw allows an attacker to overwrite a fixed‑size heap buffer and execute arbitrary code in the context of the vulnerable process.

Exploitability – The vulnerability is remotely exploitable; no authentication is required. A proof‑of‑concept exists, and the CVSS v3.1 base score is 7.8 (High) (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Affected Products – All installations of the open‑source GStreamer multimedia framework that include the JPEG parser component.

TPRM Impact – GStreamer is embedded in a wide range of third‑party applications (media players, video conferencing, IoT devices, cloud‑based transcoding services). A compromised library can become a supply‑chain foothold, enabling attackers to pivot into downstream vendors, exfiltrate data, or disrupt services.

Recommended Actions –

  • Deploy the upstream patch released by GStreamer (see commit 7d3c258).
  • Conduct an inventory of all internal and partner systems that ship or depend on GStreamer.
  • Verify that the patched version is in use; if not, apply mitigations (e.g., sandboxing, network segmentation).
  • Monitor logs for anomalous JPEG parsing activity and enable intrusion‑detection signatures for known exploit patterns.
