LiveThreat Vulnerability Brief — CVE-2025-71216

What It Is — Trend Micro Apex One’s security‑agent cache mechanism suffers a Time‑Of‑Check‑Time‑Of‑Use (TOCTOU) flaw that lets a local attacker bypass signature verification and obtain root privileges. Exploitability — Requires the attacker to first run low‑privileged code; proof‑of‑concept publicly disclosed; CVSS 7.8 (High).

Affected Products — Trend Micro Apex One (Security Agent).

TPRM Impact — The vulnerability directly affects any organization that deploys Apex One for endpoint protection, especially Managed Service Providers (MSPs) that bundle the product for multiple customers. A successful local privilege escalation can be leveraged to move laterally, exfiltrate data, or compromise downstream services, amplifying supply‑chain risk.

Recommended Actions — 1️⃣ Apply Trend Micro’s remediation update (KB 0022458) to all Apex One agents immediately. 2️⃣ Verify patch deployment via inventory tools and endpoint health checks. 3️⃣ Conduct a post‑patch audit for anomalous privileged activity or unexpected processes. 4️⃣ Reinforce least‑privilege configurations on endpoints and restrict local execution of untrusted code.
