Critical Remote Code Execution in GStreamer H.266 Codec Parser (CVE-2026-3084) Threatens Media Applications

A high‑severity integer‑underflow bug in GStreamer’s H.266 codec parser (CVE‑2026‑3084) allows remote code execution. The flaw impacts any product that embeds the vulnerable library, creating supply‑chain risk for media‑heavy applications. Prompt patching and risk‑register updates are essential for TPRM teams.

Critical Remote Code Execution in GStreamer H.266 Codec Parser (CVE‑2026‑3084) Threatens Media Applications

What It Is – A newly disclosed integer‑underflow flaw in the H.266 (VVC) picture‑partition parser of the open‑source GStreamer multimedia framework allows an attacker to corrupt memory and execute arbitrary code in the context of the host process.

Exploitability – The vulnerability is rated CVSS 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). Exploits require local interaction with the library (e.g., feeding crafted media streams), but the low attack complexity and high impact make it attractive for targeted attacks and supply‑chain abuse. No public PoC has been released yet, but the vendor has issued a patch.

Affected Products – All deployments that embed the vulnerable GStreamer version (including Linux, Windows, and Android builds) and any downstream applications that rely on the H.266 codec parser (e.g., video‑conferencing, streaming, and broadcasting solutions).

TPRM Impact –

  • Third‑party software that bundles GStreamer inherits the same RCE risk, creating a potential supply‑chain foothold.
  • Media‑processing pipelines in critical sectors (healthcare imaging, automotive infotainment, enterprise communications) could be disrupted or compromised.
  • Failure to patch may violate contractual security clauses and affect vendor risk assessments.

Recommended Actions –

  1. Inventory all assets that include GStreamer (directly or via third‑party SDKs).
  2. Apply the vendor‑provided patch immediately (see commit 496e4f296e658fba7fd40027d3bbe6095633ec91).
  3. Validate that media ingestion points enforce strict input validation and sandboxing.
  4. Update third‑party risk registers to reflect the new CVE and re‑evaluate any vendors that ship GStreamer‑based solutions.
  5. Monitor threat feeds for any emerging exploit code or indicator‑of‑compromise (IOC) related to CVE‑2026‑3084.
